The Regular City Commission meeting starts tonight, Tuesday, August 4, at 7 p.m. Commissioners will gather in the chambers at the City Hall Complex, 150 NE 2nd Avenue. The chambers will be open to the public, while most city staff will take part by video. The agenda page includes ways to follow by telephone, YouTube and Zoom. Free shredding runs four hours on August 15
The city's free shredding event runs Saturday, August 15, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Bernard Adams Municipal Complex, 401 SW 4th Street. It is open only to Deerfield Beach residents, who should bring a driver's license or utility bill as proof. Each resident may bring up to two boxes of old files or confidential papers. Large metal or plastic clips, notebook spines and plastic covers must be removed first. File folders, paper clips and staples are accepted. Wardell Chance Memorial Field has a grand re-opening on the 17th
Wardell Chance Memorial Field will reopen Monday, August 17, with a free celebration from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The field is at the Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex, 445 SW 2nd Street. The project gives Deerfield Beach its first turf athletic field. The evening will include a ribbon cutting, youth football scrimmages, light refreshments and family activities. The city describes the work as a renovation of the field and says the updated facility will support youth sports and community gatherings while keeping Wardell Chance's name on the site. Jr. Anglers Day returns to the pier in September
Deerfield Beach's annual Jr. Anglers Day returns Saturday, September 19, from 8 a.m. to noon at the International Fishing Pier, 200 NE 21st Avenue. The event is for children ages 5 to 13. The $10 registration includes hands-on fishing clinics, time fishing from the pier, arts and crafts, bait buckets, giveaways and other learning activities. Pre-registration is required, and the city says space is limited. The event is designed for both first-time anglers and children who already fish, with experienced anglers leading the clinics. A letter writer objects to the November charter question
A letter in the New Pelican's Viewpoints section objects to a charter amendment question headed to the Nov. 3 ballot. The letter says the question would replace the scheduled March 2027 and March 2029 city elections with November elections in 2028 and 2030. According to the writer, that shift would give current officeholders another 20 months in office. As alternatives, the writer proposes keeping the March elections and shortening those terms by four months, or applying any longer terms to the winners of the next elections. The letter notes that commissioners approved the question on a 3-2 vote, with Mayor Drosky and commissioners Hudak and Plaut in the majority. The writer urges voters to reject it. Crystal Lakes Drive sidewalk meeting moves to August 17
The community meeting on Crystal Lakes Drive and NW 45th Street improvements has moved to Monday, August 17, at 7:30 p.m. It will be held at the West Deerfield Beach Community Center, 580 South Powerline Road. The city plans to explain a roadway upgrade that includes new pavement, concrete sidewalks, crosswalks, curb ramps, lighting, signs and pavement markings.
