Deerfield votes Tuesday on the county solid waste agreement
The Aug. 4 Solid Waste Authority vote, $100 school-zone notices starting Aug. 10, and the West Deerfield center closed for repairs.
The city commission votes Tuesday, Aug. 4, on the Broward County Solid Waste Authority agreement, the concrete next step after the commission's July 30 workshop on the master plan.
The agreement is already viable. Twenty-four municipalities have signed, and those signatures cover 80 percent of Broward's population, the threshold required for the plan to proceed. Lighthouse Point votes Aug. 11, and the county's deadline to sign is Aug. 14.
Signing does not lock a city in for good. Cities may opt out in 2027, once pricing is known, or stay in through 2048. New Pelican estimates the cost to an average homeowner at about $3 a year.
Tuesday settles whether Deerfield Beach is in that group by the deadline.
Firefighter Challenge runs three days at Main Beach
The Firefighter Challenge comes to the Main Beach Parking Lot, 149 SE 21st Ave., from Thursday, Aug. 20 through Saturday, Aug. 22. It is free and open to the public.
Qualifying rounds run Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tandem and relay competition begins Friday at 8 a.m. The opening ceremony and individual competition begin Saturday at 8 a.m.
Competitors work in full turnout gear and breathing apparatus through a tower climb, an equipment hoist, forced entry, a charged hose advance and drag, and a 165 pound victim rescue.
Free Saturday meals start Aug. 8 at Nina's Place
Free grab-and-go meals begin Saturday, Aug. 8, at Nina's Place on the Zion Lutheran Church campus, 959 SE 6 Ave. They run every Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Each meal includes a protein, rice and vegetables.
There is no registration for these Saturday meals, and they are open to everyone. Anyone who wants one shows up inside the hour and a half window and picks up a meal.
It starts next Saturday, not this morning, and it repeats weekly from there.
Adega Gaucha runs Dine Out Lauderdale menus through September
Adega Gaucha is running Dine Out Lauderdale menus at its Deerfield Beach location, 240 S Federal Hwy, from Aug. 1 through Sept. 30. The offer applies to the Deerfield location only.
The $35 lunch includes the Gourmet Table, a 10 ounce picanha with fried yuca, and flan. It is served Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.
The $60 dinner includes the full churrasco experience, the Gourmet Table and dessert. Tax and gratuity are extra on both menus.
No ticket or sign-up is required to get the pricing. Reservations are recommended.
School-zone speed cameras switch on Aug. 10
Speed cameras in Deerfield Beach school zones start issuing notices Aug. 10, the first day of school.
The limit in an active school zone is 15 mph. Drivers recorded more than 10 mph over that get a $100 notice in the mail, listing the date, time and location of the violation along with photo evidence.
The RedSpeed systems run only on school days. They begin 30 minutes before the school day starts and shut off 30 minutes after it ends, so the zones are not enforced by camera on weekends, holidays or during the rest of the day.
Five schools are covered: Deerfield Beach High School, Deerfield Beach Middle School, Deerfield Beach Elementary, Tedder Elementary and Quiet Waters Elementary.
West Deerfield Community Center closed, two services relocated
The West Deerfield Community Center at 580 Powerline Road is closed until further notice while repairs are made, and the two city functions that operated out of it have moved.
Parking enforcement is now at City Hall, 150 NE 2nd Ave. Code compliance is now at the Johnny L. Tigner Community Center, 445 SW 2nd St.
Code compliance hearings are not affected. They continue as scheduled in Commission Chambers.
Existing phone numbers remain functional, so anyone who already has a number for parking enforcement or code compliance can keep using it. The change is where to go in person, not who to call.
