12 hurt after a car and van crash near Powerline Road

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies and Fire Rescue responded Monday afternoon to Northwest 49th Court and Powerline Road, where a car and a van had crashed. Twelve people were taken to Broward Health North — one was in critical condition, and the rest had minor injuries. Northwest 49th Court was shut down while investigators looked into what happened. Florida joins a five-state speeding crackdown this week
From July 13 through July 18, Florida is taking part in Operation Southern Slow Down alongside Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The effort pairs stepped-up speed enforcement with public education. The Florida Department of Transportation notes that speeding was a factor in about six percent of the state's traffic fatalities in its 2024 Florida Traffic Crash Facts report. FDOT's reminders include allowing extra travel time, keeping out of the far-left lane except when passing, slowing before curves, and using extra caution in construction and school zones — a good reminder to ease off the gas this week and every week. The Fishing Pier's far end is closed until 11 a.m. today
This morning, the International Fishing Pier at 200 NE 21st Avenue is partially closed from opening until 11 a.m. The stretch from the second pavilion to the end is closed for necessary work, while the front portion through the second pavilion remains open. Free shredding for residents this Saturday morning
Deerfield Beach residents can bring old files and confidential paperwork to a free shredding event this Saturday, July 18, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Recycling Drop-Off Center at the Bernard Adams Municipal Complex, 401 SW 4th Street. Before you load up the car, pull off any large metal and plastic clips, spines, and plastic notebook covers; file folders, paperclips, and staples are fine. The limit is two boxes per resident, and the city asks attendees to bring a driver's license or utility bill as proof of residency. Monthly shredding events are scheduled through September. A neighborhood meeting on Crystal Lake Drive improvements is set for July 20
