Deerfield honors Holy Cross emergency nurses
Early voting opens Oct. 19, shredding is free for residents, and the county may sue the sheriff.
Wednesday was Emergency Nurses Day, a good moment to thank the people who meet our neighbors on their hardest days. Deerfield Beach got a head start.
Holy Cross nurses Lisa Alward, Angi Dionne, Karla Davis and Ian Worley accepted the proclamation from Mayor Todd Drosky at the city's Oct. 6 commission meeting. It came ahead of Emergency Nurses Week, which runs through Oct. 17. Alward, who chairs the nursing council at the Holy Cross emergency department in Deerfield Beach, said the recognition "means a great deal to our local frontline health care workers." She also thanked Drosky and Vice Mayor Michael Hudak for their support. Holy Cross describes emergency nurses as caring for patients on their worst days, and the week is meant to recognize that work. The hospital has served Deerfield Beach residents for more than 70 years, and in May it opened a health center and emergency care site in the city. Another Holy Cross health center and emergency care site, Fort Lauderdale at Sunrise, is under construction and set to open in August 2027, which Holy Cross says will mean more emergency nursing jobs.
A Deerfield pizza shop's no-AI pledge draws a crowd online
Munchy's Pizza, a family-owned shop in Deerfield Beach known for over-the-top pizzas and wings, has a TikTok post past 25,000 likes. In it, the shop says it won't use artificial intelligence, and the clip is closing in on 110,000 views, with plenty of commenters weighing in. Owner Munchy Su said he got his start in 1991, just out of high school, and has been at it since he was a kid.
County lawyer can now sue the sheriff if talks fail
On Monday, Oct. 12, a deputy turned away County Mayor Mark Bogen and several commissioners when they arrived at the sheriff's headquarters to inspect its training facility, telling the group to book a visit through the agency. At an emergency meeting Tuesday morning, the commission voted unanimously to let the county attorney sue Sheriff Gregory Tony if negotiations go nowhere. Bogen's motion instructs the county attorney to pursue "any and all appropriate legal action" needed to get the county inside, naming the Research, Development and Training Center in particular. It also clears the way for other legal steps to assert the county's rights against the sheriff's office. The board wants to examine how the sheriff's office spends its $870 million budget of taxpayer money. "Everything stops if they just open their books," Bogen said.
Mail ballot requests close Oct. 22, and early voting opens Oct. 19
Filled-out mail ballots have to be back by 7 p.m. Nov. 3, and postmarks do not count, so build in time for the mail. Anyone who still wants one must ask by 5 p.m. Oct. 22. Early voting in person runs Oct. 19 through Nov. 1, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters may pick any early site in the county rather than only the closest. On Election Day, Nov. 3, neighborhood polling places keep the same hours.
